Hello and welcome to our photography exhibition, VISUM CAMPUS! The inspiration for this exhibition, which is the latest of many already held by Viewfinders, the English-speaking photography club of Brussels, came largely from some of our members who work on the UCL Woluwe site as scientific researchers. Some of us had already visited exhibitions held here at the cosy little "Arte-Fac" gallery. Put the two together and - voila - the idea for a completely different sort of exhibition for Viewfinders was born.
Different? Whereas previous exhibitions, all highly successful in their own right, had a very broad thematic approach and large scale participation (often more than 100 images) in some very grand and prestigious galleries, the intimacy of the Arte-Fac gallery itself called for a completely different approach: Viewfinders members must now make a photographic expression of a very specific place, UCL Woluwe, in only one, maximum two images. We do not publish titles for the pictures, which enriches the interaction between the photographer and the viewer by channeling it purely through the image itself, using a language, not of the brain, but of the mind and the heart.
Through this, the exhibition becomes more than just an exhibition - it is a complete project for the participants, starting from visits to the site to capture completely new images, all the way through the technical aspects of image preparation to the final setting up of the exhibition space itself. Quite a journey - but an educational and fun journey it has been! The collaboration with Arte-Fac has allowed Viewfinders to branch out into a new direction, complementing its already wide range of photographic activities and for this we are very grateful to the Arte-Fac staff for their kind support.
