Introduction to the DARKROOM

one-day workshop

Black and White prints from A-Z

A one-day workshop for beginners who want to learn the basic steps of making a good black and white print.

For dates of the next session see the workshop summary page or the calendar page

This workshop will cover the key elements of film development and printing technique. Participants will be shown the process step by step, and be able to practice what they learn immediately on individual enlargers at the darkroom facility in the British School.

Black and White photography offers the photographer complete control from the moment of picture taking to the finished print. The ability to adjust contrast and tones can greatly enhance the mood and impact of a finished print, permitting a much higher degree of creativity and expression than with lab-processed prints.

Subjects covered include:

Different types of BW film
Film development
Using an enlarger to make prints
Different kinds and characteristics of print papers
Making test strips
Controlling tone and contrast
Selective lightening and darkening
Print development
Equipment and safety considerations for home printing

All materials will be provided. Sessions are limited to a maximum of five participants to facilitate individual participation.

LOCATION and FEE: The workshop will be held at the British School in Tervuren, and will be led by Matthew Lea - a teacher of photography at university level in the UK, and a freelance social-documentary photographer.
Lunch and refreshments are included in the participation fee of 120 Euros (150 Euros for non-members), plus full notes of material covered.
