ELEMENTS
OF
COMPOSITION

one-day workshop

A small group workshop which explores the elements and principles of composition - what to include in an image, and how to put it all together.

For dates of the next session see the workshop summary page or the calendar page

Familiarity with composition gives a photographer - at whatever level - the confidence and ability to emphasise what they see, to build strong images from ordinary situations.
This workshop is about the visual side of photography. Advance knowledge of camera technique - while of course helpful - is certainly not required. The session makes full use of projected slides to illustrate the principles covered.
  • Preparing the ground.

What to put in, and what to leave out
Placing and emphasising the main subject
    Eliminating or minimising distractions

  • Key building blocks of composition.

    Perspective, texture, and rhythm
    Lead-in lines and curves
    Emphasising the third dimension

  • Overall design, and the intangibles

The 'rules' of composition (and how to break them)
    Creating mood and emotion.
    Using tonal and colour contrast
